46 WILD / THE CLAMMING FIELD GUIDE
Razor Clamming With Kids
Let them be part of the adventure.
Give everyone a role
Children can spot shows, learn the tool and count their own catch. Keep the pace friendly. A few clams and a happy walk back can be a successful first outing.
Know the rules for helping
Check WDFW’s current child-digger guidance, license requirements and assistance rules. Keep each digger’s catch separate and do not assume an adult may harvest another person’s limit.
Plan for comfort
Pack extra layers, snacks, water and dry clothes. Stay close together, watch the surf and leave before anyone gets too cold or tired. Choose conditions that suit the youngest member of the group.
