46 WILD / THE CLAMMING FIELD GUIDE

What to Wear Razor Clamming

Dress for the wind, the rain and the walk back.

Start with dry feet

Wear boots suitable for wet sand. Bring dry socks and a change of shoes for afterward. Waders do not make rough surf safe.

Build layers

A moisture-managing base, a warm middle layer and a waterproof outer layer let you adjust as you work. Waterproof trousers help when kneeling or handling wet gear.

Protect the small things

Bring gloves, a hat and a headlamp with spare batteries for appropriate evening digs. Pack a towel and dry clothes in the car. Check the actual forecast before leaving.
