The Coast Between Clam Digs

A postponed dig doesn’t have to mean a wasted trip. Pick a place that makes you curious, and let the coast tell you a different story.

Choose your kind of day

These ideas focus on the Long Beach Peninsula, Willapa Bay and the lower Columbia. If you’re staying near Twin Harbors, Copalis or Mocrocks, start with your beach guide below for places closer to you.

VILLAGE & FOOD

Oysterville

Walk the historic village, look across the bay and connect the oyster story to a present-day farm. Check access and food service before setting out.

HABITAT & WILDLIFE

Willapa refuge

Choose a trail from the refuge’s official visitor guide. Its units are spread around the bay: choose a destination before you drive. Check closures and trail conditions, especially at Leadbetter Point.

Ilwaco

See the fishing harbor from public areas and explore the port’s business guide. Boats at the dock are the starting point for understanding a community’s work.

AN INDOOR ANCHOR

Three ways to put a day together

A slower peninsula day: Oysterville village, a public bay viewpoint, then a meal. Add a farm tour only with a booking.

A river day: Ilwaco’s waterfront, then Astoria’s maritime museum. Allow for the drive and bridge crossing; these are separate destinations.

A wildlife day: Pick one refuge trail and give yourself time to watch. Bring binoculars if you have them. Follow posted wildlife protections and stay on authorized routes.
