Two Bays, Two Different Worlds

Willapa Bay and the Columbia River estuary are neighbors. Spend time beside each and you’ll notice two very different working waterfronts.

Get your bearings

The Pacific is west of the Long Beach Peninsula. Willapa Bay lies along its eastern side. To the south, the Columbia River meets the Pacific, with Ilwaco on the Washington side and Astoria across the river in Oregon.

WILLAPA BAY

Look across the flats

Start in Oysterville or Nahcotta. Oyster-growing ground, shallow-water work and broad tidal flats give you a way into the story. The refuge adds another layer: the same bay supports wildlife and the people who work beside it.

COLUMBIA RIVER ESTUARY

Watch the river traffic

Start at Ilwaco’s waterfront or Astoria’s maritime museum. Fishing vessels, cargo ships and the work of pilots help explain how a river connects inland communities to the ocean.

What’s an estuary, anyway?

It’s where freshwater and seawater meet. Both places are influenced by tides and freshwater; their shapes, channels and river inputs give them different characters. On the Columbia, the meeting of river and ocean also creates the challenging entrance known as the Columbia River Bar.

Same coast. Different questions.

On Willapa Bay, ask: how does a grower reach the oysters, and what changes when the flats emerge? On the Columbia, ask: how does a ship get from the ocean into the river, and who helps it cross the bar?

The Columbia River Bar Pilots describe their work guiding vessels between the open sea and the river entrance east of Astoria. That’s a human story worth carrying with you when a ship passes.

Try two waterfront stops

Choose Oysterville or Nahcotta for a bay view, then Ilwaco or Astoria for a river view. These are separate stops connected by roads—not a waterfront walking route. Use your map for directions and allow time for conditions and bridge travel.
